Alfred Gerald Caplin (September 28, 1909 – November 5, 1979), widely recognized as Al Capp, was an American cartoonist and humorist renowned for his satirical comic strip Li'l Abner, which he created in 1934 and continued to develop, with assistance, until 1977. He also produced the comic strips Abbie an' Slats (from 1937 to 1945) and Long Sam (in 1954). In 1947, he received the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year, and posthumously, the 1979 Elzie Segar Award for his "unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning."

His comic strips primarily focused on northern urban experiences until he introduced "Li'l Abner," the first strip set in the South. Although Capp hailed from Connecticut, he dedicated 43 years to educating the public about Dogpatch, reaching an estimated 60 million readers across more than 900 American newspapers and 100 foreign publications in 28 countries. M. Thomas Inge notes that Capp amassed a considerable personal fortune through the strip and significantly influenced perceptions of the American South.
