In the past, it was also divided into 1000 mils. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority serves as the monetary authority for both Hong Kong and its currency. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has granted licenses to three commercial banks to produce their own banknotes for circulation within Hong Kong. These banks—HSBC, Bank of China, and Standard Chartered—each issue banknotes featuring unique designs in denominations of HK$20, HK$50, HK$100, HK$150, HK$500, and HK$1000, with the designs for each denomination being consistent across the different banks. Conversely, the HK$10 banknote and all coins are issued by the Government of Hong Kong.
