Simón Iturri Patiño (June 1, 1862 – April 20, 1947) was a Bolivian industrialist who became one of the world's wealthiest individuals by the time of his death, earning him the nickname "The Andean Rockefeller." He amassed his fortune through his extensive ownership in Bolivia's tin industry. During World War II, Patiño was considered one of the five richest men in the world.
There is some disagreement among Patiño's biographers about his early life. Some accounts describe him as a "cholo," of mixed Quechua and Spanish heritage, born to a poor mother, while his authorized biography claims he was of purely European descent and the son of a provincial leader. In reality, he was the illegitimate son of Eugénio Iturri, a Basque, and María Patiño, from Cochabamba. Before entering the mining industry, he either managed a store in Oruro or spent years attending private schools.
Patiño's mining career began with the Compañía Huanchaca de Bolivia, a silver mining company, and later with Fricke y Compañía. In 1894, while working in collections for a store, he accepted a land deed to settle a $250 debt owed by a prospector. The deed was for a seemingly worthless rocky mountainside, and Patiño was dismissed from his job for settling an account with what appeared to be a valueless piece of property. According to legend, he had to repay the store from his own funds and was left stuck with the dubious piece of land.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
