The National Steel Corporation (1929–2003) was a prominent American steel manufacturer, established in 1929 through a merger orchestrated by Weirton Steel, involving assets from the Great Lakes Steel Corporation and M.A. Hanna Company. The company's headquarters were in Pittsburgh. Despite launching during the onset of the Great Depression, National Steel reported a profit of $8.4 million in 1930 and remained profitable in 1931, unlike many of its competitors.

Its success was largely due to sales to the automobile industry, with major steel production facilities located near Detroit, which helped reduce shipping costs. Throughout the Great Depression, National Steel managed to achieve profitability every year. Following World War II, the company experienced record profits due to the high demand for steel. Although National Steel continued to generate substantial profits into the 1970s, the latter part of the decade saw fluctuations due to the growing consumption of imported steel. In 1979, the company diversified by acquiring United Financial Corporation, the parent company of Citizens Savings & Loan Association of San Francisco, which was the seventh-largest savings and loan institution in the United States at the time.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
