Attorney Appointment for the New York, Lackawanna and Western Railway Company signed by J.A. Roebling.

John Augustus Roebling (born Johann August Röbling; June 12, 1806 – July 22, 1869) was a German-born American civil engineer renowned for his design and construction of wire rope suspension bridges, most notably the Brooklyn Bridge, which is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

In 1848, Roebling began work on four suspension aqueducts for the Delaware and Hudson Canal. During this time, he relocated to Trenton, New Jersey, where he established a major industrial facility for wire production under his company, John A. Roebling's Sons Company. This industrial complex contributed to Trenton's famous motto, "Trenton Makes, the World Takes," displayed on the Lower Trenton Bridge.

Roebling developed an "equilibrium strength approach," an approximation method where equilibrium conditions are satisfied, but deformation compatibility is not strictly enforced. He calculated the dead and live loads, distributed these loads between cables and stays, and applied a substantial safety factor to ensure structural integrity. This method provided a sufficiently accurate analysis of the structure, assuming it was sufficiently ductile to accommodate the resulting deformations.

Roebling's company, John A. Roebling's Sons Co., is also credited with supplying the cables for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, constructed between 1933 and 1937. The Golden Gate Bridge remains an engineering marvel, bearing Roebling's legacy posthumously. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_A._Roebling
