Boston was established in 1630 on the Shawmut Peninsula by English Puritan settlers, who named the city after the market town of Boston in Lincolnshire, England. Throughout the American Revolution, Boston was the site of numerous pivotal events, including the Boston Massacre in 1770, the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Paul Revere's Midnight Ride in 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775, and the Siege of Boston from 1775 to 1776. After the United States gained independence from Great Britain, Boston maintained its significance as a major port, a center for manufacturing, and a hub of education and culture. The city also underwent considerable expansion beyond the original peninsula through land reclamation and the annexation of surrounding towns. Notable achievements in Boston's history include the establishment of the first public park in the United States, Boston Common, in 1634, the first public school, Boston Latin School, in 1635, and the first subway system, the Tremont Street subway, in 1897.
