The original afghani (ISO 4217 code: AFA) was established in 1923 during the reign of King Amanullah Khan, supplanting the Afghan rupee that had been in circulation since 1891. The afghani was subdivided into 100 puls, with 20 afghanis equating to one amani. The conversion rate from the rupee is occasionally cited as 1 afghani = 1 rupee and 6 paisas, a figure derived from the silver content of the last rupee coins and the initial afghani coins. The afghani originally contained 9 grams of silver. Concurrently with the introduction of this new currency, Afghanistan transitioned to a unified metric system for its various units of weight.
