Its product offerings encompassed agricultural machinery, construction equipment, power generation and transmission systems, as well as machinery utilized in industrial environments such as factories, flour mills, sawmills, textile mills, steel mills, refineries, mines, and ore processing facilities. The original Allis-Chalmers Company was established in 1901 through the merger of several companies, including the Edward P. Allis Company (known for steam engines and milling equipment), Fraser & Chalmers (focused on mining and ore milling machinery), the Gates Iron Works (specializing in rock and cement milling), and the industrial segment of the Dickson Manufacturing Company (which produced engines and compressors).

In 1912, the company was reorganized and renamed the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company.
