Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth, housing the geographic South Pole. It is located within the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, predominantly situated south of the Antarctic Circle and bordered by the Southern Ocean. Covering an area of 14,200,000 square kilometers (5,500,000 square miles), it ranks as the fifth-largest continent, nearly double the size of Australia. With a population density of merely 0.00008 individuals per square kilometer, it is the least densely populated continent. Approximately 98% of Antarctica is enveloped in ice, with an average thickness of 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles; 6,200 feet), extending to all areas except for the northernmost parts of the Antarctic Peninsula.
