The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (reporting mark ATSF), commonly known as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the major railroads in the United States. Chartered in February 1859, the railroad was established to connect the cities of Atchison and Topeka in Kansas with Santa Fe, New Mexico. By 1873, the railroad had reached the Kansas–Colorado border, and in 1876, it extended to Pueblo, Colorado. To generate demand for its services, the railroad established real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants awarded to it by Congress. Although the railroad was initially intended to serve Santa Fe, it opted to bypass the city due to the engineering difficulties posed by the mountainous terrain. However, a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico, eventually connected Santa Fe to the railroad that bore its name.

The Santa Fe was a pioneer in intermodal freight transport, operating not only a railroad but also an airline, the short-lived Santa Fe Skyway, and a tugboat fleet. Its bus service expanded passenger transportation to areas not accessible by rail, while ferryboats on San Francisco Bay allowed travelers to complete their westward journeys to the Pacific Ocean. The AT&SF also became a cultural icon, immortalized in the popular song "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe" by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer, written for the 1946 film The Harvey Girls.
