The Atlas Corporation, established in 1928, is an American investment firm that has played a significant role in the management and investment of numerous prominent U.S. companies throughout the 20th century, alongside various investments in natural resources. The formation of Atlas Corporation resulted from the merger of the United Corporation, an investment firm initiated in 1923 with an initial capital of $40,000, and Atlas Utilities and Investors Ltd. The corporation focused on capital formation and management. By 1929, Atlas had evolved into a $12,550,000 investment trust. It adeptly navigated the challenges posed by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, allowing it to continue its growth during the 1930s and 1940s. The founding figures of the corporation were Floyd Odlum and his brother-in-law, Boyd Hatch.
