August Belmont signed Exchange Receipt dated 1845 - Autograph Exchange Receipt
Inv# AU1157 AutographAugust Belmont executed the Exchange Receipt. August Belmont Sr. (originally named August Schönberg; December 8, 1813 – November 24, 1890) was a financier, diplomat, politician, and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, who emigrated from Germany to America. He was also involved in horse breeding and owned racehorses. He established the Belmont Stakes, which is the third leg of the Triple Crown series in American Thoroughbred horse racing.
During the financial and economic downturn known as the Panic of 1837, numerous American enterprises, including the Rothschild family's representative in New York City, failed. Consequently, Belmont delayed his trip to Havana indefinitely and initiated a new business, August Belmont & Company, with the intention of replacing the recently insolvent American Agency. August Belmont & Company achieved immediate success, and over the following five years, Belmont revitalized the Rothschilds' interests in the United States. Belmont, New Hampshire, was named in his honor, a recognition he never publicly acknowledged. Additionally, the Liberty ship SS August Belmont was named after him.
