BP p.l.c., previously known as The British Petroleum Company p.l.c. and BP Amoco p.l.c., is a British multinational corporation in the oil and gas sector, with its headquarters located in London, England. It ranks among the "supermajors" in the industry and is recognized as one of the largest companies globally in terms of revenue and profit. The company operates across the entire spectrum of the oil and gas industry, encompassing exploration and extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and trading. BP's history traces back to the establishment of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1909, which was created as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to capitalize on oil discoveries in Iran. In 1935, it rebranded as the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, and in 1954, it adopted the name British Petroleum. The company expanded its operations beyond the Middle East to Alaska in 1959. In 1978, British Petroleum gained majority control of Standard Oil of Ohio. Following a period of majority state ownership, the British government privatized the company gradually from 1979 to 1987. In 1998, British Petroleum merged with Amoco, resulting in the name BP Amoco p.l.c., and subsequently acquired ARCO and Burmah Castrol in 2000, as well as Aral AG in 2002. The name was officially shortened to BP p.l.c. in 2001.
