BorgWarner Inc. is an American multinational automotive supplier headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The company maintains production facilities and technical systems at 96 sites (as of February 23, 2021) in 24 countries worldwide and has around 50,000 employees. BorgWarner is one of the 25 largest automotive suppliers in the world. Frédéric Lissalde has been CEO of BorgWarner Inc. since August 1, 2018.
Company operations/sites
1928 The BorgWarner Corporation is founded. The founding companies include Borg & Beck, Marvel-Schebler, Warner Gear and Mechanics Universal Joint.
1987 The BorgWarner Corporation goes through a leveraged buyout and, through a series of complex transactions, ceases to exist. BorgWarner Automotive Inc. is founded as a subsidiary of a new company, known as the BorgWarner Corporation.
1993 BorgWarner Automotive Inc. becomes an independent company.
2002 The company is organized into Engine and Drivetrain business units to promote cooperation and growth.
2004 BorgWarner founds a joint venture mostly based in Korea and known as SeohanWarner Turbo Systems. BorgWarner Morse TEC opens a new plant in South Korea and a second one in Japan to satisfy the growing demand for control systems.
2005 The headquarters of BorgWarner move from Chicago to metropolitan Detroit , an important location to the worldwide automotive industry. BorgWarner opens an office in Shanghai and a production facility in Ningbo, China. In cooperation with what is now Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, BorgWarner founds a TurboAcademy to train future engineers in the basics of turbocharger technology.
2006 BorgWarner opens new sites in Korea, France, Germany and China and expands its operations for a variety of its business units.
2007 The European Drivetrain Competence Center is opened in Ketsch, Germany. The subsidiary SeohanWarner Turbo Systems, in which BorgWarner has a majority share, opens a new production facility in Pyongtaek, South Korea.
2008 On the BorgWarner grounds at Arnstadt, Germany, a second plant is opened to satisfy the growing demand for the DualTronic® transmission technology. The site consists of two production facilities, a vehicle laboratory and a proving ground. The turbocharger production facility in Oroszlány, Hungary is expanded and a new plant for BorgWarner Thermal Systems is opened in Ningbo, China.
2009 The first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified “Green Building” in Poland is opened in the form of a new turbocharger plant in Rzeszów, Poland. BorgWarner United Transmission Systems, a joint venture with 12 Chinese automotive manufacturers, is founded with the aim of producing various dual-clutch transmission modules. Transmission Systems AutoForm Ltd., a majority-owned joint venture, is founded in Eumsung, South Korea.
2010 The BorgWarner China Technical Center is opened in Shanghai and a new plant is opened at Chennai, India to provide production, sales and engineering support on site.
2011 The one millionth turbocharger is built on the BorgWarner campus in Ningbo, China.
2012 BorgWarner expands its site in Ningbo, China, by adding a new development center and a production facility for the manufacture of variable cam timing technologies and engine timing systems. BorgWarner BERU Systems celebrates 100 years and BorgWarner Transmission Systems marks 75 years in Germany. In Brazil, BorgWarner builds a new production facility and a development center.
2013 The company expands its emissions systems business with new facilities in India and Viana do Castelo, Portugal. On the campus in Poland, BorgWarner expands its new production and development center for chain-driven engine control systems and transmission solenoids. The BorgWarner plant in Dixon, Illinois celebrates its 50th anniversary.
2014 The company opens new sites in Taicang, China as well as in Brazil and Mexico. Sites in Hungary and the U.S (Michigan and Illinois) are expanded. New sites in China and Brazil are granted gold and silver LEED certification, respectively.
2015 BorgWarner establishes new plants in China, Thailand, Brazil, Hungary, India and South Korea. The company expands sites in Ramos-Arizpe, Mexico and in the U.S..
2016 A new research and development facility is opened at the BorgWarner Technical Center in Spain. To serve the growing southeast Asian market, BorgWarner establishes a new turbocharger plant in Rayong, Thailand.
2017 BorgWarner expands the development of its electromobility and hybrid electric vehicle technologies, enhancing its range accordingly.
2018 New facilities are opened in Ningbo, China and Rayong, Thailand and its facility in Kakkalur, India expands to support new production lines. The 2018-2019 Sustainability Report is released reinforcing the company’s commitment to the Environment and Governance.
2020 BorgWarner takes over Delphi Technologies. This step strengthens the company’s electronics and power electronics products, capabilities and scale. It also enhances BorgWarner’s combustion, commercial vehicle and aftermarket businesses.

1929 Acquisition of Morse Chain, the predecessor of BorgWarner Morse TEC.
1968 BorgWarner takes over Stieber Rollkupplung GmbH, a predecessor of BorgWarner Transmission Systems.
1998 Establishment of the 3K-Warner Turbosystems GmbH in Kirchheimbolanden as a BorgWarner subsidiary after the takeover of the turbocharger division from Kühnle Kopp & Kausch AG.
1999 BorgWarner takes over Eaton Fluid Power in Kysor as well as Schwitzer Cooling and combines them to form BorgWarner Cooling Systems.
2005 BorgWarner acquires a majority share in BERU AG, a leading supplier of diesel cold-start technology, sensors, electronics and ignition system technology with headquarters in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
2006 BorgWarner acquires the European product lines for transmission and engine controls from the Eaton Corporation in Monaco.
2009 Acquisition of state-of-the-art ignition technology, EcoFlash®, from Etatech Inc.
2010 BorgWarner acquires Dytech ENSA in order to expand its product portfolio in the field of exhaust gas recirculation technologies.
2011 BorgWarner takes over the business unit Traction Systems (headquartered in Landskrona, Sweden) from Haldex, a company that manufactures all-wheel drive technologies.
2014 BorgWarner takes over Gustav Wahler GmbH & Co. KG, a manufacturer of exhaust gas recirculation valves and pipes as well as coolant control valves for on- and off-road applications.
2015 After the takeover of Remy International, Inc., BorgWarner combines it with TorqTransfer Systems and names the resulting company PowerDrive Systems. Morse TEC changes its name to Morse Systems to match the expanded product line.
2017 To complete its solutions for power electronics and electric propulsion, BorgWarner takes over Sevcon, Inc. The company also invests in Autotech Ventures in order to receive access to global startup companies and new technologies.
2020 BorgWarner acquires Delphi Technologies for $3.3 billion dollars.
2021 BorgWarner takes over the battery systems manufacturer Akasol for 730 million euros.
BorgWarner is currently developing and working on clean and efficient future technologies for all types of propulsion: combustion engine, hybrid vehicle and electric vehicle. The recent acquisition of Delphi Technologies strengthens BorgWarner’s electronics and power electronics products, capabilities and scale. Through the transaction, the company has enhanced its combustion, commercial vehicle and aftermarket businesses at the same time.
Air Management
The Air Management segment develops and manufactures products to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance performance. The Air Management segment’s technologies include: turbochargers, eBoosters, eTurbos, timing systems, emissions systems, thermal systems, gasoline ignition technology, smart remote actuators, powertrain sensors, canisters, cabin heaters, battery heaters and battery charging.
e-Propulsion & Drivetrain
The e-Propulsion & Drivetrain segment’s technologies include: rotating electrical components, power electronics, control modules, software, friction and mechanical products for automatic transmissions and torque management product.
Fuel Injection
The Fuel Injection segment develops and manufactures gasoline and diesel fuel injection components and systems.
Aftermarket
The Aftermarket segment sells products and services to independent aftermarket customers and original equipment service customers. The Aftermarket product portfolio includes a wide range of solutions covering the fuel injection, electronics and engine management, maintenance, and test equipment and vehicle diagnostics categories.

BorgWarner has close links with one of the largest racing events in the world, the Indianapolis 500. As the sole turbocharger supplier for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, BorgWarner’s EFR™ (Engineered for Racing) turbocharger has been fitted in all participating vehicles in each season since 2012.
Since 1936, the company has also appeared as the sponsor of the Borg-Warner Trophy™, which serves as an annual prize for the winner of the Indianapolis 500.
