Check with vignette in purple or black. Washington revenue stamp. BankBoston was a significant financial entity located in Boston, Massachusetts, established in 1996 through the merger of Bank of Boston and BayBank. Although it has roots tracing back to 1784 via its predecessor, the Massachusetts Bank, the newly formed BankBoston had a relatively brief existence. It was acquired by Fleet Bank in 1999, which subsequently merged with Bank of America in 2005. The legacy of BankBoston illustrates the trend of bank consolidation throughout New England over the course of more than two hundred years. Notable predecessor institutions included the First National Bank of Boston, Old Colony Trust Company, and BayBank. Following the divestiture of its Latin American branches in 2006, the BankBoston name persisted solely as a private banking subsidiary under the ownership of Bank of America.
