William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey (June 24, 1895 – May 31, 1983), known by the monikers "Kid Blackie" and "The Manassa Mauler," was an American professional boxer active from 1914 to 1927. He held the title of world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. As a cultural icon of the 1920s, Dempsey was renowned for his aggressive fighting style and remarkable punching power, which contributed to his status as one of the most celebrated boxers in history. His bouts frequently broke financial and attendance records, including the inaugural million-dollar gate, and he played a significant role in the advancement of live broadcasts of sporting events, particularly boxing matches. Dempsey is ranked tenth on The Ring magazine's list of all-time heavyweights and seventh among its Top 100 Greatest Punchers. In 1950, the Associated Press recognized him as the greatest fighter of the preceding 50 years. He is an inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and was previously honored in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
