Initially focused on agriculture, the company became the largest global producer of fruits and vegetables through its mergers with the modern Dole Food Company. In 1995, it separated from Dole, and its primary operations now revolve around real estate and the development of residential, commercial, and retail properties. Founded in 1851 by Samuel Northrup Castle and Amos Starr Cooke, the company began as a department store offering farm tools, sewing supplies, and medicine. Joseph Ballard Atherton joined as a clerk in 1858 and became a partner by 1865. The company significantly invested in Hawaii's sugar industry, managing plantations in Kohala and Haiku. Following the deaths of Cooke in 1871 and Castle in 1894, Atherton assumed the presidency when the company was incorporated. After Atherton's passing, George Parmele Castle served as president until his retirement in 1916, after which Edward Davies Tenney took over as chairman.
