Charles Thomson (1729-1824) was a steadfast American Patriot and the only Secretary to serve the Continental Congress during its entire existence, from 1774 to 1789. He was called the "Samuel Adams of Philadelphia" by John Adams. Charles Thomson's name (as Secretary), along with John Hancock's (as President of Congress), appeared on the first published version of the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776. Thomson is also credited, along with William Barton, with designing the Great Seal of the United States.
