Unique vignette shows a early 14-stamp mill used to crush gold ore. The gold fragments were then recovered using mercury. The Cherokee was one of the early discoveries in Plumas County. The gold was found in quartz veins that were mined on and off until around 1900. The neighboring mines were the Altoona and Green Mountain.
