Established in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker who championed religious liberty, the city served as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony during the British colonial period. It played a crucial role during the American Revolution, acting as the primary venue for the nation's founding fathers. Philadelphia hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, safeguarded the Liberty Bell, and was the site of the Second Continental Congress, where the 56 founders established the Continental Army and appointed George Washington as its commander in 1775. Additionally, they unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The city experienced British occupation for nine months, from September 1777 to June 1778, during the Philadelphia campaign of the war. In 1787, the U.S. Constitution was ratified at the Philadelphia Convention. Philadelphia held the title of the largest city in the nation until 1790 and served as the first capital of the United States from May 10, 1775, to December 12, 1776, and on four additional occasions until 1800, when the new national capital in Washington, D.C. was completed.
