Established in 1839 and incorporated in 1841, Clarion has a historical background marked by the extraction of natural gas, oil, lumber, and coal in its vicinity. The population figures reflect a decline, with 2,004 residents recorded in 1900, 2,864 in 1910, and 3,931 according to the 2020 census, a decrease from 5,276 in 2010. The borough hosts the annual Autumn Leaf Festival and is the location of PennWest Clarion. Additionally, the county courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
