Request for "supplies for the Continental Army" signed by Ephraim Root for Capt. J. Ripley. Root may be relative of Jesse Root; worthy of further research.

The Continental Army served as the military force for the United Colonies, representing the Thirteen Colonies and subsequently the United States during the American Revolutionary War. Established on June 14, 1775, through a resolution by the Second Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia following the onset of hostilities, the Continental Army was designed to unify the military efforts of the colonies against British forces, who aimed to retain their dominance over the American territories. General George Washington was appointed as the commander-in-chief and held this role for the duration of the conflict. In addition to the Continental Army, local militias and volunteer forces, which were either aligned with specific states or operated independently, provided further support. The majority of the Continental Army was disbanded in 1783 after the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which officially concluded the war. The 1st and 2nd Regiments of the Continental Army later evolved into what became known as the Legion of the United States in 1792, laying the groundwork for the establishment of the United States Army.
