Container Corporation of America (CCA) was established in 1926, specializing in the production of corrugated boxes. In 1968, CCA merged with Montgomery Ward & Company, Inc., resulting in the formation of MARCOR. Although MARCOR operated with distinct management for each entity, it was governed by a shared board of directors. In 1986, Mobil Corporation, which had acquired MARCOR in the early 1970s, divested CCA to the Jefferson Smurfit Corporation. This corporation later merged with Stone Container Corporation in 1998, leading to the creation of Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. Under the guidance of Walter Paepcke, CCA became a significant supporter of graphic arts and design.

The company curated an extensive collection of artworks that ultimately contributed to the National Museum of American Art. In the late 1940s, CCA commissioned Herbert Bayer to produce a World Geo-Graphic Atlas, which was distributed at no cost to over 150 colleges and universities. A review praised it as the "handsomest and best atlas ever published in America." In the spring of 1970, CCA organized a competition to create a symbol for promoting the recycling of paper products. The contest attracted more than 500 entries, with Gary Anderson's design emerging as the winner; this design is now recognized as the universal recycling symbol. The headquarters of Container Corporation of America were situated in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
