There were several attempts to set up farming banks, including Crédit Foncier de France in 1861, but none were successful. In 2022, subsidiaries of Crédit Agricole that operate from Switzerland and Monaco agreed to pay over $1 million to the United States for violating sanctions against a number of countries, including Sudan, Syria, Cuba, and the Crimea region of Ukraine.
