10 Pesos Oro, P-62. Rare! The Dominican peso, known officially as the peso dominicano since 2010, serves as the currency of the Dominican Republic. Its symbol is "$", while "RD$" is utilized when it is necessary to differentiate it from other currencies such as pesos or dollars; its ISO 4217 code is "DOP". Each peso is subdivided into 100 centavos, represented by the ¢ symbol. Aside from the United States dollar, it is the sole currency recognized as legal tender in the Dominican Republic for all financial transactions, both public and private. Prior to the adoption of the 2010 constitution, the currency was referred to as peso oro (translated as Gold peso). The inaugural Dominican peso was established following the nation's independence from Haiti in 1844, replacing the Haitian gourde at an equal value and divided into 8 reales. The Dominican Republic transitioned to a decimal system in 1877, dividing the peso into 100 centavos. A secondary currency, the franco, was issued from 1891 to 1897 but did not supplant the peso. However, in 1905, the peso was exchanged for the U.S. dollar at a rate of 5 pesos to 1 dollar. The peso oro was introduced in 1937 at an equal value to the U.S. dollar, although the dollar continued to circulate alongside the peso oro until 1947.
