Inv# FM3375 Foreign Paper Money500 Francs. "Gabon" "D". Front and back shown. French Equatorial Africa (French: Afrique équatoriale française, or AEF) was a federation comprising French colonial territories located in Equatorial Africa, which included Gabon, French Congo, Ubangi-Shari, and Chad. This federation was established in 1910 and remained in existence until 1958, with its administrative center situated in Brazzaville. The Federation, formed in 1910, encompassed four colonial regions: French Gabon, French Congo, Ubangi-Shari, and French Chad. The Governor-General operated from Brazzaville, supported by deputies in each of the territories. In 1911, as a consequence of the Agadir Crisis, France transferred portions of the territory to German Kamerun. Following Germany's defeat in World War I, the territory was restored, while the majority of Cameroon became a French League of Nations mandate, which was not incorporated into the AEF.
