Fidelity Trust Company was a financial institution based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 1866 under the name Fidelity Insurance, Trust, & Safe Deposit Company, it underwent several name changes, including Fidelity Trust Company, Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company, The Fidelity Bank, and Fidelity Bank, National Association. In 1988, it became part of the largest bank merger in U.S. history at that time and is now integrated into Wells Fargo. The bank was founded by financier Clarence H. Clark (1833–1906) along with several partners, starting with an initial capital of $250,000.
In addition to providing insurance and trust services, it was the second bank in the United States to offer safe deposit facilities. Its headquarters were situated at the intersection of Broad and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia. The building on Chestnut Street was designed by the architectural firm G. W. & W. D. Hewitt, with vault engineering by Frederick S. Holmes and vault construction by Damon Safe & Iron Works Co. In 1988, Fidelcor merged with First Fidelity, a rapidly expanding bank from New Jersey. This $1.34 billion transaction, which was the largest bank merger at that time, transformed First Fidelity into a significant regional entity and positioned it among the top 25 banks in the nation. Subsequently, in 1996, First Fidelity was incorporated into First Union, which later merged with Wachovia in 2001, and was ultimately acquired by Wells Fargo in 2008.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
