Check. 2 cents revenue stamp! Pomeroy, Ohio. Pomeroy, Ohio, is a small village and the county seat of Meigs County, located along the Ohio River, about 21 miles south of Athens. With a population of 1,573 as of the 2020 census, it was founded in 1804 and named after landowner Samuel Pomeroy. The village was incorporated in 1840 and became the county seat in 1841.

The earliest settlers in the area included Samuel Ervin, who arrived in 1806, followed by Josiah Dill, who opened a tavern in 1821, and Nial Nye, who established a tavern, mill, and wharf-boat by 1826. In 1830, Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy, a Massachusetts landowner, arrived, and after seeing the potential in the land he had purchased, he predicted a prosperous future for the area due to its natural resources, including coal and fertile fields.
