In April 1865, George S. Patterson, Cadwallader Evans, Ezekiel Potts, Gordon Smith, Henry K. Nichols, Thomas H. Wilson, George Pechin, and William F. Patterson formed the French Creek and Cherry Run Oil Company in Venango County, Pennsylvania. The company dug oil wells in Frenchcreek Township, Pennsylvania, and operated until at least 1867.
