Jacksonville is recognized as the most populous city in Florida and, as of 2020, the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. It serves as the administrative center of Duval County, which merged with the city government in 1968. This merger greatly increased Jacksonville's size and included most of its metropolitan population within the city limits. As of 2020, Jacksonville's population is recorded at 949,611, making it the 12th most populous city in the United States, the largest city in the Southeast, and the largest city in the South outside of Texas. The Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a total population of 1,605,848, is acknowledged as the fourth-largest metropolitan region in Florida. Located along the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, Jacksonville is situated approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and 328 miles (528 km) north of Miami.
The Jacksonville Beaches communities are found along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally settled by the Timucua people and gained prominence in 1564 as the location of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. During the British colonial period, a settlement emerged at the river's narrow crossing point, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and Cow Ford to the British. A formally laid out town was established in 1822, following the United States' acquisition of Florida from Spain, and was named in honor of Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and the seventh President of the United States.
