General Signal Corporation, previously listed on the NYSE under the ticker GSX, was a publicly traded company specializing in control equipment and systems, headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. It was included in the Standard & Poor's S&P 500 Composite Index, which comprises 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States. The corporation was a prominent manufacturer of control systems technology, primarily catering to the transportation and telecommunications sectors. In late 1998, it was acquired for $2 billion by the smaller SPX Corporation. General Signal Technology Corp. was engaged in the manufacturing of control equipment and systems and was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker GSX.

In 1986, the company expanded its portfolio by acquiring Drytek, Inc., a plasma dry-etch firm established in August 1980 by Arthur W. Zafiropoulo, who subsequently served as President and CEO of Drytek under General Signal. In July 1987, Zafiropoulo was appointed President of Kayex, a semiconductor equipment manufacturing division of General Signal. The company further expanded in 1988 with the acquisition of Mirtone. By February 1989, Zafiropoulo was elevated to the position of President of General Signal's subsidiary, Semiconductor Equipment Group International, another entity within the semiconductor equipment sector, simultaneously holding the presidency of both that subsidiary and Kayex.
