Thomas Jefferson Coolidge (August 26, 1831 – November 17, 1920) served as a U.S. ambassador and was a prominent businessman in Boston. He played a significant role in various textile mills and banking institutions. In 1853, he established a partnership with Joseph Peabody Gardner, who was the father of U.S. Representative Augustus Peabody Gardner, focusing on the East India trade. By 1875, he had taken on the role of manager at the Amoskeag Mill in Manchester, New Hampshire, which was the largest textile mill in the United States at that time. Coolidge subsequently directed his efforts towards financing the burgeoning industrial economy, with substantial investments in textiles, banking, railroads, publishing, and electricity.
