The J.M. Smucker Company was established in 1897 by Jerome Monroe Smucker, who was born on December 5, 1858, in Orrville, Ohio, where he spent a significant portion of his life as a farmer. In the same year, Smucker constructed a cider mill in Orrville. The company, which eventually began producing jellies, jams, and various food products, claims to have utilized apples from local trees in Orrville that were planted by Johnny Appleseed in the early 1800s. Smucker initially prepared apple butter and sold it from a horse-drawn wagon. The company was incorporated in 1921, at which point it was selling preserves and jellies, and by 1928, it had expanded its distribution to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. Following financial losses in 1932 and 1933, Smucker's eldest son Willard established a processing plant in Washington in 1935 for pre-processing apples, which were subsequently sent to Orrville for cooking. The introduction of its signature glass jar in 1939 led to annual sales reaching $1 million. In 1940, Smucker's launched its first range of ice cream toppings, and two years later, it began national distribution of its products. During World War II, the company encountered shortages of labor, glass, and fruit.
