100 Yen, P-42a. The yen is the official currency of Japan and is the third-most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, following the United States dollar and the euro. It is also commonly used as a reserve currency, ranking after the US dollar and the euro. Japan's modern currency system was introduced with the New Currency Act of 1871, which defined the yen as equivalent to 1.5 grams (0.048 troy ounces) of gold or 24.26 grams (0.780 troy ounces) of silver. The yen is divided decimally into 100 sen or 1,000 rin. It replaced the previous Tokugawa coinage as well as various hansatsu paper currencies that were issued by feudal han (fiefs). The Bank of Japan was established in 1882 and was given a monopoly on controlling the money supply in the country.
