His presidency occurred during the peak of the Cold War, with a significant focus on diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. He was born into a prominent and affluent political family in Brookline, Massachusetts. Kennedy graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and subsequently joined the U.S. Naval Reserve the following year. During World War II, he commanded several PT boats in the Pacific theater, earning the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his valor. After a brief career in journalism, he served as a representative for a working-class district in Boston in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953. He was later elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served as the junior Senator from Massachusetts from 1953 until 1960.
