Letter Regarding Civil War Soldiers Payments - 1861 dated Civil War Document

Inv# CW1095   Letter
State(s): Connecticut
Years: 1861
Color: White Paper

2 page handwritten letter regarding payment obligations of Civil War soldiers. Essex, Connecticut. Essex stands out as one of the rare American towns to have faced an assault from a foreign entity; this event took place on April 8, 1814, resulting in significant economic repercussions, among the most severe experienced by the United States during the War of 1812. The British forces destroyed 28 vessels, with a total estimated value nearing $200,000, a staggering amount considering that a large two-story residence in Essex, then referred to as Potapoug Point, would have been valued at no more than $1,000. One historian has referred to this incident as the "Pearl Harbor" of that conflict.
