Due to the Arbuckle price war, the few independent refineries established in the 1890s began to face financial challenges. Seizing this opportunity, H.O. Havemeyer sought to acquire the remaining independent firms: the Mollenhauers Refinery in Brooklyn, the National Sugar Company in Yonkers, and the New York Refining Company in Long Island City. He executed this acquisition discreetly, utilizing James H. Post, a partner at the independent sugar brokerage firm B. H. Howell, Son & Company. The three refineries were merged into the National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey, with James H. Post serving as president and B.H. Howell, Son & Company managing the commercial operations. On May 31, 1900, the National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey was officially incorporated in New Jersey. While it operated independently of the Sugar Trust, the American Sugar Refining Company held a 50% stake in its stock, and the National enjoyed preferential treatment from the Sugar Trust.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
