Initially established as the Maygill Petroleum Company Limited, the organization aimed to explore and develop oil leases in the Steveville region of Alberta. In 1954, Jack Piece, who hailed from Montreal, took control of the company and subsequently renamed it West Maygill Gas and Oil Limited. Two years later, in 1956, Maygill acquired the Ranger Oil Company, an American firm founded by Piece, and in 1958, it rebranded itself as Ranger Oil (Canada) Limited. Over the following decades, Piece transformed Ranger into one of the most prominent independent oil producers in Canada. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Ranger was significantly involved in the development of the North Sea oil fields. In 2000, the company was acquired by Canadian Natural Resources.

Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
