Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. Mutual Fund company. Ryan Cohen, born in 1986, is a Canadian entrepreneur, business leader, and activist investor. He established the e-commerce platform Chewy in 2011 and served as its chief executive officer (CEO) until 2018. Currently, Cohen holds the positions of chairman and CEO at GameStop. Cohen embarked on his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 15 by starting a business that generated income through referral fees to various e-commerce websites. In 2011, at the age of 25, he launched Chewy, initially named MrChewy. His choice to focus on the pet industry was inspired by his experiences while shopping for his poodle, Tylee. He credits his father, Ted, who operated a glassware importing business, as a significant influence in his career.

To expand Chewy, Cohen adopted Amazon's strategies for supply chain management, logistics, and online shopping convenience, while also emphasizing exceptional customer service through personalized touches such as handwritten holiday cards, pet portraits, and flowers for pets that had passed away. In his quest for funding, Cohen approached over 100 venture capital firms, all of which declined to invest. However, in 2013, he successfully secured the company's first external investment of $15 million from Volition Capital. By 2016, he had attracted investments from notable firms including BlackRock and T. Rowe Price New Horizons Fund. That year, Chewy achieved $900 million in sales, establishing itself as the leading online pet retailer. By 2017, Cohen had raised an additional $350 million and was preparing for an initial public offering (IPO).
