The Salem Railroad, which spans 17 miles (27 km) from Elmer to Salem, New Jersey, was chartered and incorporated on March 14, 1856. The construction of the railroad was finalized in 1863, and it was subsequently leased to the WJ on January 1, 1868. Ultimately, the line was completely merged into the WJ on January 1, 1888.
