Stock printed by Goes. "Herbert Scheel of St. Louis had developed a rotary valve engine late in the teens. In 1922 he entered into a contract with Louis Chevrolet to build 4 race cars for upcoming 1923 Indy 500, and they were to feature Scheel's rotary valve engine. The cars were built, and did practice before the 500, but were withdrawn before the race. One of the cars caught fire during practice, and the others didn't have the speed to make competitive qualification runs. Herbert Scheel ended up being reprimanded by the stockholders of the company in the summer of 1923. They were furious that he had spent thousands of dollars in developing the racing machines, and had nothing to show for it. A couple of the Scheel's later engines have survived, and are in the American Museum of Speed in Lincoln Nebraska." (B. Dunbar, Jefferson, LA)
