Forrest C. Shaklee (1894–1985), a chiropractor and nutritionist originally from Iowa and later based in Oakland, California, developed the first vitamin in the United States known as "Shaklee's Vitalized Minerals" in 1915. In 1956, he established the Shaklee Corporation alongside his two sons to produce nutritional supplements. The company adopted a multi-level marketing strategy to promote its products. Beginning in 1956, Shaklee also started to market organic and biodegradable cleaning products.
