The 43-acre Sherwood Medical Industries Superfund site is located approximately three miles northeast of downtown Deland in Volusia County, Florida, about 50 miles north of Orlando. Site features include a manufacturing facility, warehouse, laboratory, wastewater treatment facility and paved parking areas. Land uses in the area are mostly residential and commercial. A portion of Lake Miller, a 12-acre lake, is also located on site. U.S. Highway 92 borders the site to the north, a Florida Department of Transportation maintenance yard borders the site to the south, residential homes border the site to the east and Lake Miller borders the site to the west. Since 1959, Sherwood Medical Industries manufactured medical supplies on the property. The company disposed of liquid and sludge wastes into tanks and ponds on site, contaminating groundwater and soils. EPA placed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 1983 because of contaminated groundwater, sediment, soil and surface water resulting from facility operations. EPA, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and American Home Products Corporation (AHPC), the site’s potentially responsible party (PRP), have investigated site conditions. By treating and monitoring groundwater and undertaking Five-Year Reviews, EPA, FDEP and the site’s PRP continue to protect people and the environment from site contamination. The Sherwood Medical Industries site is in continued industrial use by a medical supply manufacturer. In 2007, TYCO Healthcare separated from TYCO Industries and became Covidien Corporation. Covidien Corporation currently manufactures medical supplies at the site and employs about 550 workers. Covidien Corporation’s current operations at the site include grinding, hub processing and cleaning of stainless steel and aluminum parts used to manufacture hypodermic syringes, molding plastic syringes and conducting laboratory work. Site contamination does not currently threaten people living and working near the site.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
