Specimen Stock printed by Security-Columbian Banknote Company. Storage Technology Corporation, also known as StorageTek or STK, was a data storage technology firm based in Louisville, Colorado. The company introduced new products such as data retention systems, referred to as 'information lifecycle management' (ILM). Its current product offerings are integrated into Oracle Corporation, marketed under the name Oracle StorageTek, with an emphasis on tape backup solutions and software for storage system management. Founded in 1969 by four former IBM engineers—Jesse Aweida, Juan Rodriguez, Thomas S. Kavanagh, and Zoltan Herger—StorageTek was headquartered in Louisville, Boulder County, Colorado. In the 1970s, the company established its Disk Products division. Following an unsuccessful attempt to create an IBM-compatible mainframe and an optical disk product line, StorageTek filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1984. However, from 1987 onwards, new management revitalized the company by investing in an automated tape library product line that utilized a robotic arm to retrieve tapes from a silo-like structure, allowing StorageTek to become a leading entity in that market.
