Imprinted revenue. Payable on National Bank of Redemption, Boston, MA. Great!!! Townsend is a municipality located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population stood at 8,927. The town was first established by European settlers in 1676 in a region referred to by the local indigenous population as Wistequassuck, and it was officially incorporated in 1732. The name of the town honors Charles Townshend, an English secretary of state and a critic of the Tories. Initially, the town retained the original spelling of its namesake; however, in a display of patriotic sentiment against the Townshend Acts of 1767, the "h" was removed. By 1780, the current spelling of Townsend was formally adopted.
