The Ulster and Delaware Railroad (U&D), a prominent Class I railroad in New York, was often touted as the sole route to the Catskill Mountains. Established in 1866, the U&D stretched 107 miles from Kingston Point to Oneonta, connecting five counties and playing a pivotal role in the region’s development.
The U&D primarily served as a transportation artery, carrying tourists from New York City to mountain hotels and summer resorts, and freight from local businesses. Despite facing financial challenges and the decline of passenger service due to car ownership and highway development, the U&D left an indelible mark on the area’s history and landscape.
Commercial freight service ceased in 1976, but efforts were made to preserve and repurpose sections of the corridor for public use. Today, the legacy of the U&D lives on through two heritage railroads and a scenic trail. The Delaware & Ulster Railroad (DURR) operates scenic excursions on a portion of the former U&D track between Arkville and Roxbury in Delaware County, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad offers scenic train rides near the Ashokan Reservoir. A 19-mile stretch of the former railbed is the Catskill Scenic Trail, a popular recreational pathway for walking and biking. These preservation efforts allow visitors and locals to experience the historic “golden age of railroading” in the Catskill Mountains.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
