Western Pacific Railroad Co. - Specimen Railway Stock Certificate
Inv# SE4167 Specimen StockNew York
Specimen Stock printed by Security Banknote Company. The Western Pacific Railroad, identified by the reporting mark WP, was a Class I railroad in the United States. Established in 1903, it aimed to challenge the Southern Pacific Railroad's near-monopoly on rail services to northern California. The Feather River Route of WP directly contended with the Southern Pacific's segment of the Overland Route for rail traffic between Salt Lake City/Ogden, Utah, and Oakland, California, for almost 80 years. Additionally, the Western Pacific was one of the initial operators of the California Zephyr passenger service. In 1982, the railroad was acquired by the Union Pacific Corporation and subsequently merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
